Activities

Melton has a range of activities as detailed below that with the exception of the ‘Maverick Slackline’, depend on the availability of approved Operators/Instructors to carry them out.

These Operators are only approved by the Scout Association and are therefore only able to carry out the activities for members of the movement. Furthermore, it should be understood that they do not carry out the activities listed on behalf of the ‘Campsite Trust’ but rather on behalf of those Groups who book them. The ‘Trust’ merely provides the facility and charges that are shown are those made by individuals who are known to offer their time to carry out the activities plus a small amount to cover the wear and tear of the equipment. The ‘Archery Range’ has slightly different rules and these are explained under the section headed ‘Archery.

It is the responsibility of the Group Leader to ensure that an approved operator is available before requesting any activity. Whilst the activity itself is requested through the booking secretary, he or she cannot say if operators will be available but can arrange contact with the site activities co-ordinator who would be able to say if an approved operator will be available on the day required. The Operator has the right to request a preliminary meeting with the user prior to the date of booking if this is thought necessary. All activities require parental consent for those under 16 years of age, however some are not appropriate to younger members of the Scout Movement due to height restrictions and these are listed under each section.

It should be remembered that the number of approved operators/instructors is not infinite and on some occasions they may not be available. The ‘Campsite Team’ are able to arrange training sessions for those in Scouting who would like to become approved operators however they are not able to give Permit Authorisation as this must come from the individual’s District Commissioner.

Organisations outside Scouting are welcome to use the activity equipment providing they can supply their own approved operators and written confirmation from their Governing Body verifying firstly that they are approved and that they have ‘Public Liability’ Insurance cover up to a level of at least £5 million

Please Note: All activities are subject to weather conditions and the absolute discretion of the ‘Approved Operator’ who may have to cancel them at short notice. In addition, no more then any two of the activities listed below can be booked at any one time unless Groups can supply their own approved operator.

Available Activities

Archery

ArcheryThe Archery range is normally operated by members of the ‘Centenary Archery Team’ who are approved Regionally by the Scout Association. Some of their instructors have external qualifications, and insurance indemnity, which allows them to set up and run Archery Sessions for other bona-fide educational and youth originations. The booking secretary is able to assist with contact details of the Team co-ordinator who would be happy to provide further information.

Current Charges are:

£40 per session for City of Hull Scout Groups
£50 per session for other Scout Groups
£60 per session for all other organisations

A session is normally for 2 hours but can stretch to half a day depending on the numbers in each Group, but this will be by prior arrangement and with the agreement of the approved operator. Full day sessions are charged at twice the above rates.

It is recognised that some Groups have their own archery equipment and approved instructors and should these groups wish to set up and run their own sessions on the archery range (subject to it not being in use by the ‘Centenary Team’) then they may do so at a cost of £25 which would include access to the campsite’s toilet facilities.

The Melton 3G Swing

3G Swing3G SwingThe Melton 3G Type Swing is a temporary high rope activity where the rider is strapped into a Bosun’s chair under a steel beam and hauled by a pulley system up into the air. The rider determines the height they wish to reach and at that point a ground operator releases the beam leaving the rider to swing freely until they come to a natural halt.

For safety reasons, there is a height restriction on the swing and all users must stand a minimum of 1.2 meters tall.

Current Charges are:

£40 per session for City of Hull Scout Groups
£50 per session for other Scout Groups

A session is normally for 2 hours but can stretch to half a day depending on the numbers in each Group, but this will be by prior arrangement and with the agreement of the approved operator. An additional charge may apply in some cases.

Should Scout Groups wish to provide their own approved operators (subject to verification) then the 3G swing and equipment can be hired for 75% of the above rates. For other youth organisations that can provide operators (subject to verification and conditions outlined above), the hire rate is £45.

Independent operators must be able to demonstrate to the site ‘Activities Co-ordinator’ that they are able to safely set up and use the swing  prior to the day of booking.

Crate Stacking

Crate StackingCrate stacking involves the individual trying to stack as many crates as possible whilst climbing up them to get as high as the number of crates will allow. Once at the top they simply kick the stack away from under themselves and dangle freely in the air suspended by ropes on a belay system.

Current Charges are:

£40 per session for City of Hull Scout Groups
£50 per session for other Scout Groups

A session is normally for 2 hours but this can be extended by prior agreement with the approved operator. An additional charge may apply in some cases.

Should Scout Groups wish to provide their own approved operators (subject to verification) then the equipment can be hired for 75% of the above rates. For other youth organisations that can provide operators (subject to verification and conditions outlined above), the hire rate is £45.

Operators must be able to demonstrate to the site ‘Activities Co-ordinator’ that they are able to safely set up and use the equipment prior to the day of booking.

All operators must be qualified in the use of a ‘Belay System’

The Aerial Runway

Aerial RunwayScout Association rules state that any competent Scout Leader can operate an Aerial Runway providing he or she has studied the relevant Headquarters fact sheet (FS120006) and be able to interpret this to suit a particular situation or locality.

However the Campsite Trust’s Insurers require any operator to have attended a familiarisation session prior to use and then demonstrate the setting up and safe operation of the runway. Should outside organisations wish to provide their own verified operators then they too must attend such a prior session.

Current Charges are:

£40 per session for City of Hull Scout GroupsAerial Runway
£50 per session for other Scout Groups

A session is normally for 2 hours but this can be extended by prior agreement with the approved operator. An additional charge may apply in some cases. Full day sessions are charged at twice the above rates.

Please Note: For safety reasons, there is a height restriction on the Aerial Runway and all users must stand a minimum of 1 metre tall.

The ‘Maverick Slackline’

Maverick Slackline‘Slacklining’ is a simple, fun activity that can be enjoyed by all age groups who wish to take up the challenge of trying not to fall off. It is much like a tightrope act, but in this case the line is only suspended no more then 400mm of the ground.

In some areas, ‘Slacklining’ has become an acrobatic sport, and if you want to see how, go to www.maverickslacklines.co.uk and watch the video.

No formal qualifications are required to use this equipment and setting it up is simplified by an easy step by step set of instructions.  It should be remembered however that a responsible adult should always be on hand whilst the Slackline is in use to supervise the session.

The Slackline can be hired via the booking secretary, by any Group or organisation that uses the campsite for a nominal charge of £15 per half-day session.
